This image is used with permission from the personal collection of Jim R. Draeger, the Architectural Historian at the Wisconsin Historical Society. A possible and likely explanation of The Windmill's design may be found at the Wisconsin Historical Society's page on Exotic and Fantastic architectural styles found in Wisconsin. Based on information from various sources, the building may have first been built and used as a filling station. The small stand below the windmill may have containers of oil; the pipe and hose next to it may have been a compressed air station for inflating tires. What appears to be a tail fin for the windmill appears to the left and back of the tower. It appears as though cars could be driven around the building; the absence of the decorative fence seen in the following images leads us to think that this is the oldest photo we have seen so far.
